The cultivation process for the winter agricultural plan has completely ended, according to what the Ministry of Agriculture announced today, Sunday, in a journey that will last 3 months from now before Iraq begins harvesting “golden ears” next April, amid intense anticipation to know the difference between this year’s production. Compared to last season, although the cultivated area will be the same for both seasons.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Al-Jubouri, said that the ministry approved the agricultural plan for this year based on the available revenues, which were low, warning that it would be reduced after it was two and a half million dunums during the past year, to one and a half million dunums in the current year, irrigated by irrigation or by irrigation. Projects, explaining that the cultivation process was completely completed by 100%.

In last season's plan, Iraq planted 8 million dunums in its winter cultivation plan of wheat, distributed as 2.5 million dunums irrigated with surface water, 4 million dunums with groundwater, and 1.5 million dunums depending on rain, and from this outcome, Iraq obtained 5.2 million tons of wheat last season.

However, during the current season, the area cultivated with groundwater was maintained at 4 million dunums as last year, but agriculture with surface water decreased from 2.5 million dunums (an area guaranteed for irrigation and production) to only 1.5 million dunums during the current season. In contrast, the cultivated area was increased. Rainfall from 1.5 million dunums last year to 2.5 million dunums this season.

This means that Iraq was forced to risk a million dunums during this year and move it from the area “guaranteed for surface irrigation” to the area “by chance,” that is, the area that depends on rain that may or may not fall in the quantities needed by the crop.

This measure will certainly affect wheat production this season compared to last season, even though the cultivated areas are equal between the two seasons, amounting to 8 million dunums.

But holding the current season will either bring about an unnatural jump in wheat production in Iraq this season, if rain is guaranteed on 2.5 million dunums, especially since irrigation with rain results in a higher wheat productivity than that irrigated with surface water, or rain does not fall as required and sufficient. Which will lead to a decrease in wheat production this year compared to last year.

While Iraq planted 8 million dunums last year, it produced 5.2 million tons of wheat, but according to the new mechanism in the current season and even by planting 8 million dunums. Iraq will achieve a wheat production of 6 million tons, as the Ministry of Agriculture expects, if the rains come as required. It is expected, or that smaller quantities will be produced guaranteed by surface water.

While the average productivity of one dunum per year reached 0.65 tons, this means that the area guaranteed irrigation will produce 4.2 million dunums of wheat this season, while the area dependent on rain will either achieve a 20% jump or reduce wheat productivity in Iraq by 20% this season compared to the last season.
