A mini population census for specific areas next May

The Ministry of Planning intends to conduct a small experimental population census that includes limited areas during the month of next May, as a prelude to conducting the general population census during the month of November of the current year.
The last population census conducted by Iraq was in 1997, which caused a large gap in official statistics and data, from that date until now.
Ministry spokesman Abdel-Zahra Al-Hindawi told Al-Sabah: The Supreme Census Authority and the Supreme Population Council decided that the general population census would be conducted during the month of next November, and until then, the ministry will have many requirements and stages that need to be implemented within time. Specific, revealing his ministry’s intention to contract with international companies to equip them with tablets with special specifications, since the census will be electronic.
He stated that his ministry will conduct a mini-experimental census during the next month of May, which will include specific areas in all governorates of Iraq, in order to test the capabilities, capabilities and problems that the ministry may face in this regard, enabling it to overcome them during the general census in late 2024, in addition to testing the tablet devices that Estimated between 120 to 130 thousand.
Al-Hindawi attributed the failure to complete the population census during the past years to a number of political, security and health reasons, noting that the Ministry’s most prominent attempts to implement the general census were in 2009 and 2010, when the Ministry was able to reach the final stages of implementation, but compelling political circumstances prevented its implementation.
He continued that the second attempt was in the year 2019, as the first steps began before Iraq entered the tunnel of a political crisis as well, represented by the popular movement and protests in 2019, followed by the Corona pandemic, the change of government in the year 2020-2021 and the parliamentary elections, and no budget was approved until the year 2022, arriving. Until the year 2023, which witnessed a delay in approving the budget in addition to the governorate council elections, which led to the impossibility of implementing two important events, such as the population census and the governorate council elections, in the same year.
