    Baghdad today - Erbil
Kurdish writer and journalist Anas Sheikh Mazhar said today, Sunday (February 4, 2024), that the messages exchanged in the media between America and Iran prove that the two parties indirectly agree not to escalate.
Sheikh Mazhar explained in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “what explains Kataib Hezbollah’s suspension of its attacks against American interests in Iraq, and even the American bombing of armed faction sites in Syria and Iraq last night, which can be described as ‘dull’, suggests an American desire not to escalate.” .
He added, "Regarding the possibility of the factions bombing American interests in the Kurdistan region, I think it is a weak possibility, at least at the current stage, because it will push the American side to escalate the pace of its targeting of the factions' sites and prolong the crisis that both sides, the American and Iranian, are trying to overcome quickly."
Sheikh Mazhar stated, “If American interests were targeted in the Kurdistan region, it would also not deviate from the context we mentioned, which is for the factions to target sites where American forces are not present, such as the Harir base, that is, targeting American interests without causing injuries or victims.”
Yesterday, Saturday, the Islamic Resistance factions in Iraq announced that they had targeted the Harir Air Base, which hosts American forces in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, with drones.
It also confirmed in a statement that it carried out the attack “in continuation of its approach to resisting American forces and in response to Israel’s massacres against the Palestinians in Gaza.”
This came after the US Army, on the night of Friday and Saturday, launched a series of strikes on facilities and sites belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces in western Iraq, especially in Al-Qaim, and eastern Syria, especially in Deir ez-Zor Governorate.
The American raids came in response to the drone attack last week (end of January) on the “Tower 22” base on the Jordanian border, which led to the death of 3 American soldiers and the injury of more than 40.
Note that since October 17, 10 days after the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip, these factions have launched more than 165 attacks with missiles and drones on military bases housing American forces in Iraq and Syria.
About 2,500 American soldiers are deployed in Iraq, while approximately 1,000 soldiers remain on Syrian territory.
