The Ministry of Agriculture explained the economic and strategic importance of the opening of the urea and DAP fertilizer factories in Basra, which were inaugurated by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani.
Ministry spokesman Muhammad Al-Khazali said, “The two factories belong to the General Company for the Southern Fertilizer Industry, and they have economic and strategic importance as they will contribute to reducing the import of fertilizers from abroad, and they will form a new tributary to the national economy to achieve self-sufficiency in various crops, especially since fertilizer costs large sums.” of hard currency.”
He added, “Achieving sufficiency in fertilizers will allow increasing the volume of agricultural production in Iraq and meeting the national need with many crops.”
For his part, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, confirmed that “fertilizers of various types, urea and DAP, are among the most important requirements for agricultural production, and the government has paid great attention to this issue.”
He added, “Last year, due to the scarcity of fertilizers, the private sector was given the opportunity to import fertilizers in addition to the existing local product and sell it directly to agricultural engineering agencies, the General Union of Agricultural Associations, and local agricultural companies. This step contributed to reducing the prices of urea and DAP fertilizers in the local markets.” “.
He pointed out that “the Ministry is looking forward to reducing fertilizer prices to farmers in order to reduce production costs.”
Earlier today, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, opened two urea fertilizer factories with a capacity of (1,000) tons per day, and fertilizer factories with a capacity of (500,000) tons in Basra Governorate.
