Director of the Ministry's Planning and Follow-up Department, Talib Hassan Nimah, said, "The data of the families covered by the electronic ration card has been updated, as the number of those covered has so far reached 10 million and 760 thousand citizens, and this number represents more than 26 percent of the country's population," according to Al-Sabah newspaper.

Nehme pointed out that “the Ministry is preparing to launch the electronic agencies program during the next month after agreeing with the National Center for Automation, and accelerating the technical and legal procedures to begin this in implementation of the government program to simplify procedures and reduce routine, while also completing contracts with companies to implement electronic payment.”

He added that the Ministry had previously opened centers to update data on those included in the governorates of Muthanna, Najaf al-Ashraf, Holy Karbala, Kirkuk, Dohuk, and the Karkh side of Baghdad.

He stated that "the Ministry is in the process of submitting a feasibility study to automate the ration card in the rest of the governorates and the Rusafa side of Baghdad, as it has reached advanced stages in cooperation with the Consulting Center at the University of Baghdad to overcome the obstacles that accompanied the process of modernizing the previous governorates, and the citizen will witness a great development in the upcoming automation and self-modernization process." At home, through the Ministry’s electronic application, relying on the unified national card to record data in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and using an accurate and simple programming system, to target those covered by the card and reach their real number.”

Nehme added that the Ministry will work according to the plan set to permanently move to the electronic card through daily follow-up of the governorates to complete it as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Commerce had previously announced the withholding of ration cards from approximately 700,000 individuals, including deceased and travellers, to whom monthly rations were paid.
