Although Iraq is completely dependent on the oil sector, which constitutes its lifeline, this blessing has increased the high rate of pollution resulting from the extraction and refining of oil, and the production of electrical energy, which called for taking several measures to mitigate pollution.
Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad told “Al-Sabah”: “Attention to environmental standards is of interest to the ministry, and we have developed special plans in this field.”
He added, "We have placed a clause in every contract obligating producing companies to adhere to environmental standards, preserve public health, and adopt the most stringent international standards when working on oil and energy projects," indicating that "the Ministry is working to reduce the levels of associated gas combustion."
He pointed out that "after 2003, we made ambitious plans to reduce gas flaring, and the Basra Gas Company was established in 2010 in cooperation with (Shell) and (Mitsubishi) to invest associated gas from 3 important fields," pointing out that "the Basra Gas Company was able to implement a large part Among its plans, in addition to contracts concluded by the Ministry of Oil to reduce associated gas.”
Jihad stated that “these plans will lead to the gradual production of clean energy in the coming years, which will enhance national production, which will reflect positively on the reality of the environment.” He revealed that “we are investing in Basra gas (1,200) million standard cubic meters, and in Maysan gas (30 million standard cubic metres). ) million standard cubic meters, and in Dhi Qar gas (200) million standard cubic metres, in addition to the licensing rounds that were activated, such as the fifth round, as a global invitation was sent to companies to participate in the fifth round and sixth round supplements, stressing that “with these projects, gas burning will be stopped.” ".
He stressed that “these contracts will prevent the release of tons of pollutants into the atmosphere,” and pointed out that “Iraq is committed to the Paris Agreement according to environmental standards and more than the percentage allocated to it, which is 2% until 2030,” stressing that “Iraq has exceeded this percentage and is on the right path, in There are still plans to activate renewable energy.”
For his part, Ministry of Electricity spokesman Ahmed Musa revealed the Ministry of Electricity’s projects to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase dependence on clean energy.
Moussa told Al-Sabah: “We have high coordination with the Ministry of Environment and we are a core member of the Supreme National Initiative for Energy Support, and we are working on projects to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and combustion products.”
He added, "The specific projects we are working on are combined cycle projects that operate from the simple cycle, because the composite units operate on combined heat and not on fuel or gas and produce 4,000 megawatts and are environmentally friendly," noting that "we have begun handing over plots of land to establish solar energy stations." For international companies such as Total, which has begun work to establish a 1,000 megawatt power station, and the Chinese company Power China.
He added, “We have contracts with an international group to establish stations in Babylon and Karbala to produce solar energy, and we have projects and reports with the Baghdad Municipality and the Investment Authority to produce energy from waste recycling, and we have projects for cooling units that increase the efficiency of generating stations without fuel,” and he stressed that “the Ministry of Electricity It is working to benefit from wind energy by offering opportunities for international companies to invest in it,” revealing, “561 government buildings will be converted through the Higher Energy Support Initiative, and the first package of hospitals, schools, and ministries will be converted to solar energy.”
