Shafaq News/ The German Embassy in Iraq confirmed, today, Thursday, that implementing the Sinjar Agreement and improving living conditions in Sinjar is “necessary” to normalize conditions in the district, which is inhabited by a majority of the Yazidi religion.
The embassy stated in a statement today that its Chargé d'Affairs, Maximilian Rasch, discussed with the Yazidi poet Murad Ismail from the Sinjar Academy "challenges and solutions" of the Yazidi issue.
The statement added that the German government is committed to supporting the Yazidi cause.
On October 9, 2020, Baghdad and Erbil reached an agreement to normalize the situation in Sinjar, which stipulates joint management of the judiciary in administrative, security, and service aspects.
ISIS had invaded Sinjar district in 2014 and committed a massacre against its residents, before the Peshmerga forces regained it the following year.
However, the Iraqi army, supported by the Popular Mobilization Forces, extended its control over the judiciary as a result of the tension between the region and the federal government against the backdrop of the independence referendum in 2017.
There are currently two local administrations for Sinjar, one of which was appointed by the authorities of the federal government, and the second is a government that conducts its work from Dohuk Governorate.
The anti-Ankara Kurdistan Workers' Party also formed a faction loyal to it there under the name "Sinjar Protection Units" and receives salaries from the Iraqi government as a faction under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilization Forces.
