    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Representative Hussein Mardan, confirmed today, Saturday (April 13, 2024), Iraq’s success in overcoming what he called the most important “decade of agriculture” after 2003, and providing chemical fertilizers to farmers.
Mardan said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Providing and securing chemical fertilizers for farmers has, for many years, constituted a complex issue in the agricultural sector in Iraq, especially the cessation of most national production lines and the necessity of importing, which contributed to raising the costs of agriculture by rates of up to 35%, with the increase in prices accompanied by complications." Security in transporting it between governorates.
He added, "The Iraqi state has adopted a flexible road map during the year 2023 in order to overcome the fertilizer complex in the agricultural sector and give flexibility in importing it to reduce prices to currently reach 650-750 thousand dinars per ton, which is close to prices in neighboring countries," pointing out that "talk about... A price difference of up to 45% is not true.”
He pointed out that "reducing prices reduced the costs of agriculture in general at varying rates, but the most important thing is to start a government plan to achieve self-sufficiency in fertilizer production in light of the presence of all the factors that help to advance this project through materials, factories and expertise," stressing that "reducing the costs of fertilizers It gives farmers flexibility to overcome their losses due to high prices in previous seasons and the possibility of offering their crops at lower prices.”
On (April 8, 2024), the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee revealed the features of the first five-year plan to save the agricultural sector in Iraq, stating that it “presented a road map consisting of several important points to the Prime Minister that constitutes the first plan extending for five years in order to actually implement it through... Real programs that begin with the accelerated transition to modern irrigation, lining rivers, and presenting rewarding offers in implementing modern agricultural programs that rely on economic feasibility, with the importance of giving the utmost importance to the principle of water management and making it a priority for all governments.”
She pointed out that "the Ministry of Agriculture contracted to import more than 13,000 pivot and fixed sprinklers, which is the beginning of the first steps in implementing the five-year plan, which we see as a path to saving agriculture and thus protecting the land of Mesopotamia from the most dangerous crises by securing water for agriculture and humans and avoiding the stage of comprehensive drought, the consequences of which will be dire for everyone." sectors without exception.
