The specialist in the field of environment and water, Samim Salam, pointed out the dangers of the lack of water imports from upstream countries to Iraq.
Samim Salam said, “The lack of water releases from upstream countries has led to major problems in the ecosystem,” noting “a decrease in fish stocks due to weak water flow, increased pollution concentrations, and a lack of dissolved oxygen in river water.”
He added, “The problem of the water issue with neighboring countries has caused entire lakes to be out of service in various governorates of Iraq, such as: (Lake Al-Habbaniya, Lake Al-Tharthar, and Lake Hamrin).”
The specialist in the environmental field confirmed that “many bodies of water, most of them at the level of the critical line of water storage,” pointed out that “most of the lakes in Iraq have turned into a watercourse, such as Lake (Ana) in western Iraq.”
He explained, “The lack of water releases has generated many societal problems. The residents of the Lake Habbaniyah Basin, who number 13,000 people, lost their source of livelihood, as they used to practice fishing, as the drying up of the lake prompted them to migrate toward cities with abundant water.”
Samim Salam continued, “More than (15) thousand children were exposed to various skin diseases and digestive system diseases as a result of low water levels and pollution.
