    Baghdad today - Erbil
The Mayor of Erbil, Nabz Abdul Hamid, announced today, Thursday (May 30, 2024), the continuation of the campaign on unregistered mobile phone lines in the governorate.
Abdul Hamid said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that, “Since the beginning of this year, we have implemented a major campaign, in conjunction with the security authorities and telecommunications companies, to remove and close offices that sell unregistered phone lines.”
He added, "These SIM cards have caused social problems, and also on the part of Ehterazat, we have launched a campaign to prevent their circulation, and now there are no offices in Erbil that sell unregistered phone lines."
On September 5, 2021, the Ministry of Transport and Communications in the Kurdistan Region announced the suspension of “unregistered” mobile phone lines, based on the recommendation of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
The ministry said in a statement, “In light of a recommendation from Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Regional Council of Ministers decided to suspend the unregistered SIM card,” indicating that “directives were issued to the Ministries of Interior and the Ministries of Transport and Communications to take the necessary measures to prohibit dealing with such cards that do not carry any priorities.” .
The Ministry indicated the need to "display all information about customers using these lines," pointing to "taking new steps through which dealing with telecommunications lines will be legal in the Kurdistan region to limit the spread of this phenomenon."
The statement explained that "the Ministry of Transport and Communications made serious efforts with the Ministry of Interior to address this phenomenon, and several meetings were held with the relevant authorities in this context," noting that "a special committee was formed for it, with the participation of the Ministry, representatives of the Council of Ministers, and the leadership of the Ministry of Interior."
