The Ministry of Water Resources announced that the salinity of marsh water had decreased by half compared to previous years, while indicating that several measures had been taken to address water scarcity in the marshes.
A statement by the Ministry of Water Resources stated, “The procedures of the Iraqi Marshes and Wetlands Revitalization Center continue to address water scarcity and high evaporation rates, due to high temperatures, and in coordination with the irrigation and maintenance departments, by deepening and disinfecting the waterways leading deep into the marsh.”
He added, “These measures have had a positive impact on the lives of local residents in the marshes and the ease of their movement within the waterways, in addition to improving water quality and removing mud deposits.”
He pointed out, “The Ministry of Water Resources, in coordination with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, worked to transform the drains of the Najaf al-Ashraf and Diwaniyah governorates and the Thirst River in the Muthanna Governorate to the eastern Euphrates drain and from there to the general estuary, which led to the salinity of the marsh waters being reduced by half compared to previous years.”
He continued, “The Ministry also installed a pumping crew on the dam separating the Euphrates River between the districts of Chibayish and Medina to take advantage of the tidal water coming from Basra to enhance the drainage entering the Central Marshes and the Hamar Marshes.”
