Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: The Turkish Statistical Authority announced that Iraqis ranked fifth among the countries that purchased the most real estate in Turkey during the month of May.
Since 2015, Iraqis have been at the top of the list of countries in buying homes in Turkey, but they fell to second place after Iran at the beginning of 2021, and to third place since April 2022 thanks to Russian dominance of the Turkish real estate market.
The Iraqis fell from first place, which they occupied since 2015, to second place after Iran at the beginning of 2021, and then to third place since April 2022, with the increase in Russians buying real estate in Turkey.
Over the past years, Iraqis have remained the main buyers of real estate in Turkey, for reasons that include the relative political stability in Turkey, the strong economic relations between the two countries, the desire of Iraqis to diversify their investments, and the attractiveness of Turkish real estate.
The year 2021 witnessed a decline in Iraqis purchasing real estate in Turkey, due to the economic decline in Iraq and the rise in the value of the Turkish lira against the Iraqi dinar.
Iraqi demand for real estate in Türkiye is expected to continue in the long term, driven by the factors mentioned above.
Economic and political developments in both Iraq and Turkey lead to fluctuations in the pattern of Iraqis purchasing real estate.
In recent years, a disturbing phenomenon has emerged related to accusations that some Iraqis are laundering money by purchasing real estate in Türkiye. Media reports and economic studies indicate an increase in real estate purchases by Iraqis at high prices, disproportionate to their declared sources of income, which has raised suspicions about the use of these properties to launder illegally acquired money.
