Parliament prepares to vote on cybercrimes and the intelligence service

The parliament is witnessing ongoing discussions regarding the Information Crimes Law, which has sparked widespread controversy among political and popular circles, and which aims to regulate cyberspace and combat cybercrimes. However, its articles and clauses have been described as "loose". A member of the parliamentary legal committee, Mohammed Jassim Al-Khafaji, explained in an interview with "Al-Sabah" that the Information Crimes Law may be one of the laws that will be discussed during this session by the relevant committees, such as the Culture and Media Committee, Legal, Human Rights, and Security and Defense Committee, noting that it has been subject to discussions in numerous workshops with the participation of more than one committee, which may lead to its re-introduction to the political arena. He added that the law will not be passed in the form that came from the government, as many amendments will be made to it, as it was rejected by many parties. He pointed out that with the start of the new legislative session, expectations are increasing regarding its re-introduction with the introduction of fundamental amendments to it in an attempt to achieve a balance between protecting digital security and preserving citizens' rights. Al-Khafaji added that many workshops were held to discuss it, expecting it to be raised again in the halls of parliament. In turn, member of the parliamentary security and defense committee, Ali Al-Bandawi, revealed that important security laws will see the light during the upcoming parliamentary sessions, including the Intelligence Service and Information Crimes Laws, noting that the Intelligence Service Law is ready for voting. He pointed out that there is a parliamentary consensus to pass these important laws within the council due to their importance in supporting the security services, and they will be voted on during the current parliamentary session.
