It is noteworthy that the member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Sherzad Samad, commented today, Thursday (August 1, 2024), on the information published by "Baghdad Today" regarding the names nominated to fill the positions of Kirkuk Governor and Council Chairman .
Samad said in an interview with Baghdad Today that "negotiations are still ongoing with the aim of reaching an agreement regarding the formation of the local government and the appointment of the governor ."
Regarding the nomination of Ribwar Taha for the position of Kirkuk Governor and Ahmed Al-Hamdani for the presidency of the council, Samad pointed out that "this scenario is the closest and most likely to happen, especially in light of the pressure of the Prime Minister and his setting a time frame to resolve the issue of forming the government in Kirkuk and naming the positions ."
Despite the holding of the first session of the Kirkuk Provincial Council, no agreement has yet been reached on the selection of a new governor, and pledges have been made to the blocs and members of the council that any agreement will not be put on the table of the council meeting .
The Arabs, with their various parties, have 6 seats in the Kirkuk Council, while the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has 5 seats, the Turkmen have 2 seats, the Kurdistan Democratic Party has 2 seats, and the Babylonian Movement has 1 seat .
Throughout the previous months, the Arabs and Turkmen had 8 seats, while the Kurds and the Christian seat also had 8 seats, which prevented any front from obtaining the majority that should be 9 seats. However, new moves represented by the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s split from the Kurdish-Christian alliance and joining the Arabs and Turkmen led to a relatively similar split in the ranks of the Arabs, which could prevent this front from forming 9 seats and forming the majority.
