    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
MP Mudhar Al-Karwi revealed, today, Monday (August 5, 2024), the determination of the location of the second largest solar panel power plant in Iraq .
Maan said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Ministry of Electricity is proceeding with activating the file of transitioning to clean energy in securing electricity for large areas in Diyala Governorate through advanced stations that rely on solar panels to produce from 120 to 125 megawatts."
He added, "A specialized delegation from the Ministry of Electricity arrived in the vicinity of Jalawla district in Diyala in order to determine the appropriate land to establish a station, the second in the province," indicating that "this station will be the largest in the eastern regions of the country, with its capacity to produce more than 125 megawatts."
He pointed out that "the selection of the geography of solar stations is subject to specific points through the environment, transportation lines, and logistical and technical support," stressing that "all the Hamrin Basin areas are a model environment for building solar stations, especially with the rays that increase productivity throughout the year."
On Saturday (June 22, 2024), the Diyala Chamber of Commerce launched a three-step initiative to exploit the “capital of the sun” to end the electricity curse in Iraq .
The head of the Diyala Chamber of Commerce, Mohammed Al-Tamimi, said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "We have been preparing a comprehensive study for months in coordination with international organizations on ways to enhance the capabilities of using clean energy in Iraq, including solar panels to generate electricity," stressing that "all organizations call our country the capital of the sun, indicating the availability of all the appropriate conditions for the success of the experiment of generating electricity through solar rays throughout the year, which is the highest for most countries in the world ."
He added, "The study is a three-step initiative that will be submitted to the Prime Minister's Office soon, the most important of which is lifting all taxes on the import of solar panels, batteries and systems for generating electricity. There are 7-9 specialized international companies that can be contracted to establish integrated systems at good prices to support poor families and those with limited income." He pointed out that "the clean energy sector is increasing in Iraq by 5% annually and could jump to 50% in a short period if the government deals flexibly with the solar energy file ."
He pointed out that "relying on solar energy will reduce the pressure on the national system and create a culture of production and self-sufficiency without any environmental pollutants such as the use of generators, and will address the problems of psychological pressure due to the electricity curse that will not end in the country for many reasons, including internal and external ones ."
The Ministry of Electricity is working on contracts to generate electricity from solar energy at a rate of 2,500 megawatts as a first phase out of more than 7,000 megawatts over the next few years, which could constitute 20% of the total electricity production in Iraq.
Economic reports stated last May that Iraq is making advanced progress in building the largest solar power plant in Iraq and the Middle East .
A report by the Economy Middle East website, which was reviewed by Baghdad Today, indicated that “advanced steps have been taken to build the station that supplies approximately 350,000 homes with electricity in southern Iraq,” and said that this comes within the framework of the Iraqi government’s efforts to rely on sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative energy and reduce gas flaring and exploitation .”
The report pointed out that "the stability factor in the country encourages the completion of more energy projects that have been delayed."
“The French energy giant, TotalEnergies, will build a 1 GW solar power plant in Iraq as part of several contracts awarded to the company in 2021 as part of an integrated project,” he explained. “The other contracts include developing the Ratawi oil and gas field, establishing a plant to process and collect associated gas from a number of oil fields in southern Iraq, and implementing a project to extend pipes to extract and pump water used in crude oil extraction operations from oil wells.”
