    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, announced today, Monday (August 12, 2024), an agreement to present a candidate for the presidency of parliament in exchange for giving up one of the ministries.
Al-Maliki said in a televised speech about the parliament presidency crisis, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the legislative institution has been affected by a problem and is now managed by the first deputy and must be stabilized with a full presidency."
He added, "There is a controversy raised about the desire of the largest component to control the presidency of parliament, and this is not true," stressing that "the Coordination Framework is keen on completing the political process and ending the crisis of the presidency of parliament."
Al-Maliki continued: "We agreed as political parties to present a candidate from one of the Sunni parties in exchange for giving up one of the ministries to the other party," stressing that "the Coordination Framework took the initiative more than once to find a consensus among the Sunni forces regarding the presidency of parliament."
It is noteworthy that the head of the Bayariq Al-Khair bloc, Muhammad Al-Khalidi, revealed on Saturday (August 10, 2024) that there are important meetings within the Sunni house that will be held next week to resolve the Parliament Speaker’s issue and come up with a consensus candidate, indicating that Salem Al-Issawi has the most chances of occupying the position .
Al-Khalidi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Sunni forces held several meetings during the first week of August in order to proceed with an agreement that would lead to ending the complex of the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, considering it the entitlement of the Sunni component."
He added that "all the meetings have not succeeded so far in overcoming the differences between the Sunni forces, although there are important meetings on Sunday and Monday that may yield important results leading to the creation of a consensus that determines the path for choosing the Speaker of Parliament, noting that MP Salem Al-Issawi is the most likely to proceed with any upcoming consensus path."
Al-Khalidi pointed out that "the Coordination Framework supports any unified position of the Sunni forces regarding the settlement of this position because delaying it is not in the interest of any party and the ball is now in the court of the Sunni forces with all their titles."
On November 14, 2023, the Federal Court announced the termination of Mohammed al-Halbousi’s membership as deputy and speaker of parliament, while the Sunni blocs have not yet succeeded in deciding the position due to disagreements and the lack of consensus, as parliament failed in four attempts to elect a replacement for al-Halbousi in light of the Sunni fragmentation and the insistence of the Coordination Framework on a consensus candidate .
