    Economy News - Baghdad
Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadil, confirmed on Monday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s launch of the executive works of three combined cycle projects last Saturday confirms the government’s seriousness in continuing to invest in the electricity sector to increase production. While he indicated that it does not require fuel to operate, he revealed that strengthening the system will save the state $3 billion annually.
"Combined cycle projects are one of the government program projects that the ministry has been implementing since we assumed responsibility to put in place real, serious and effective steps to add four thousand megawatts to the electricity system in the various Iraqi governorates," Fadhel said in a statement reported by the official news agency, and seen by "Al-Eqtisad News." He pointed out that "these projects confirm the government's seriousness in continuing to invest in the electricity sector to increase production."
He added, "We started from Basra Governorate, then Baghdad, Diyala, and Anbar, passing through Najaf, Karbala, Diwaniyah, and the rest of the governorates. We have passed the stage of contracts and discussions, and we are launching new projects week after week."
He explained that "combined cycle projects invest the heat emitted from stations in generating energy and require 24 months, or two years, to implement. It is hoped that they will produce 4,000 megawatts per day, and since they do not operate on fuel, they will save 3 billion dollars annually and contribute to supporting the national grid system."
Last week, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani launched the implementation work on 3 combined cycle projects in the electricity sector in the governorates of Baghdad, Diyala and Anbar.
