    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
The Permanent National Committee for International Humanitarian Law revealed, today, Thursday (August 15, 2024), that Iraq obtained the first rank in the Arab world in compliance with international humanitarian law.
The head of the committee, Fadhel Al-Gharawi, said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", that "Iraq ranked first on the Arab level in the field of implementing international humanitarian law," indicating that "the Iraqi government has strengthened compliance with international humanitarian law by introducing a curriculum for teaching international humanitarian law in universities and military and security institutes."
He added that "Iraq has adopted a binding policy to protect civilians in times of peace and war, which was approved by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and which is the first compliance document in the region," noting that "the Iraqi government seeks to achieve harmonization with international humanitarian law agreements, through the Permanent National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross and a group of national experts."
Al-Gharawi explained that "a number of legislations have been completed in the field of international humanitarian law, the most important of which are the law on police duties, the law on the protection of cultural objects, the law on the protection of emblems, and the law on international crimes. It also seeks to complete the law on the prohibition of landmines and cluster weapons," noting that "all security forces have undergone intensive training in the application of international humanitarian law and mechanisms for the protection of civilians."
He explained that "the Iraqi government, within the framework of its full efforts to implement and enforce international humanitarian law, has submitted a voluntary report on the extent of the State of Iraq's commitment to the standards of implementing international humanitarian law and the mechanisms for complying with the international agreements to which Iraq has acceded."
