Member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Raed Al-Maliki, proposed a solution to resolve the controversy by amending the Personal Status Law, describing it as “the best.”
Al-Maliki said: “The best solution to resolve the controversy over amending the Personal Status Law is to grant {choice and freedom}, meaning that no one will be forced to impose anything on anyone, whether they belong to a sect or component, or adopt a sectarian or religious ideology, or believe in a doctrine or do not recognize it.”
He added: “Rather, the choice will be given between remaining or submitting to the current law in force or resorting to the provisions of the doctrine they choose when holding a visit.”
Al-Maliki stressed that “the amendment guarantees freedom and does not impose commitment on anyone.”
The head of the National State Forces Alliance, Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim, called on the House of Representatives to further clarify and scrutinize the articles of the Personal Status Law to ensure its conformity with the provisions of Islamic jurisprudence, its suitability for the circumstances of the era, and its full protection of women’s rights.
