The Parliamentary Legal Committee confirmed that all objections to the Civil Status Law will be taken into consideration, while indicating that there is no imposition of will in passing the law.
Committee member Raed Al-Maliki said in an interview with the official media that “all objections and comments regarding the Personal Status Law will be taken into consideration,” noting that “concerns about the law are misunderstood by the media and by parties that attributed non-existent clauses and paragraphs to the law.”
He added, "There is no imposition of will in passing the law, and today's session for the second reading ended based on the proposals that will be taken into account and studied in formulating the draft law."
He pointed out that “the essence of the law is to give Iraqis the freedom to choose their personal status according to the constitution, which guarantees it in Article 41.”
Last Monday, the House of Representatives concluded discussing the proposal to amend the Personal Status Law.
The media department of the House of Representatives said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The House of Representatives has completed the report and discussion of the proposed law amending Personal Status Law No. (188) of 1959, Articles 2 and 10.”
