Political and economic researcher Haitham Al-Khazaali revealed, today, Thursday (September 12, 2024), the main element in the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Iraq, while indicating that Iran aspires to increase trade exchange to 50 billion.
Al-Khazaali said, “The visit is of great importance due to the geographical connection between Iraq and Iran, as well as the historical connection between the two countries. Iran is linked to Iraq by a border of more than 1,400 km, and there are economic, cultural, social and religious ties between the two countries and a strategic depth that affects the national security of both countries.”
He added, "There are common interests, especially in the economic aspect, and this aspect is the main element of this visit, as Iran aspires to increase the volume of trade exchange with Iraq from (10) billion dollars to (50) billion dollars in the long term and to have partnerships in various economic aspects, including the establishment of industrial cities, the development path file."
Al-Khazaali continued, “Pezeshkian’s visit to Baghdad, Erbil, Najaf, Karbala and Basra carries many messages that Iraq is in contact with all segments of the Iraqi people, and that it has economic and security files with various Iraqi cities. Therefore, the visit included several cities and held meetings in Baghdad with all the main political forces.”
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani received yesterday morning, Wednesday (September 11, 2024), the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, at the beginning of the Iranian President's first official foreign visit after assuming his duties last July, where an official reception ceremony was held at Baghdad International Airport.
The Prime Minister's media office said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today" that "Al-Sudani received, this morning, Wednesday, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, at the beginning of the Iranian President's first official foreign visit after assuming his duties last July, where an official reception ceremony was held at Baghdad International Airport."
The statement added: "The ceremony included playing the national anthems of both countries, and a review of the guard of honor representing the various branches of our armed forces."
He pointed out that "Al-Sudani will hold extensive talks with the Iranian president, who is accompanied on the visit by an expanded delegation of Iranian government ministers, which will focus on developments in the region and the events in Gaza, in addition to discussing strengthening economic, security and trade cooperation files, and partnership in a number of development sectors."
He added: “The two sides will also sponsor the signing ceremony of a package of memoranda of understanding in the field of tax cooperation, and in the fields of agriculture, natural resources, communications, social protection, youth and sports, education, tourism, cultural and artistic exchange, cooperation in the field of antiquities, as well as in the field of vocational training, development of skilled manpower, and cooperation between chambers of commerce.”
Iran's new President Masoud Pezeshkian begins an official visit to Iraq today, seeking to strengthen the already close bilateral relations between the two countries in his first foreign visit since his election in July.
Pezeshkian pledged to give “priority” to strengthening ties with neighboring countries as he seeks to ease Iran’s international isolation and mitigate the impact of Western sanctions on the Islamic Republic’s economy.
“Relations with neighboring countries… can neutralize a great deal of the pressure caused by sanctions,” he said in August.
Pezeshkian also pledged during his campaign to revive the 2015 international agreement that lifted economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear activities. The United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, reimposing harsh sanctions, especially on oil exports.
Pezeshkian appointed the architect of the 2015 deal, diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif, as his deputy for strategic affairs as part of his push to open up Iran to the international arena.
“This trip will be an opportunity to strengthen and deepen friendly and brotherly relations between the two countries in various fields,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said this week.
The Iranian presidency website reported on Thursday that Pezeshkian's visit will last for three days. It noted that the Iranian president will hold meetings, in addition to official meetings, with Iranians in Iraq and with businessmen. He will visit the cities of Najaf, Karbala and Basra.
