The Oil and Gas Committee in the House of Representatives revealed international attempts to prevent the cessation of gas flaring in Iraq.
Committee member Zainab Jumaa Al-Moussawi said, “There are attempts by some countries to have Iraq continue to burn associated gas during the process of extracting crude oil from Iraqi fields in order for Iraq to remain an importer.”
She pointed out that "stopping the burning of gas will enable Iraq to operate all its power stations, achieve self-sufficiency, and export the surplus of national energy abroad," indicating that "there are countries from southern and western Iraq that want to supply electrical energy, so stopping the burning of gas in the atmosphere is certainly not in their interest."
Regarding the role of Parliament in reducing the gap in natural gas imports, Al-Moussawi stated, “The role of Parliament is to monitor the executive authorities (the Iraqi Ministry of Oil), and we in the Oil and Gas Committee have follow-up committees that continuously visit Iraqi fields, including the southern fields in Basra Governorate, which burn a large percentage of associated gas, in order to follow up on this work to reduce the gap in natural gas imports.”
The member of the Oil and Gas Committee in the House of Representatives concluded by saying, “Through the recent licensing rounds launched by the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Oil, which are the fifth and sixth supplementary rounds, it wants to move towards exploiting this natural resource that is costing the country about 450 million dollars, stressing the support of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee for these government efforts to end the issue of flaring gas in the atmosphere.”
