Baghdad/Al-Masala: Speculations and discussions are increasing about the election of a new speaker of the Iraqi parliament, as reports indicate that MP Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani is the closest to assuming this position. However, this approach is not without reservations, especially from the Shiite and Kurdish forces, which raises many questions about the extent of Al-Mashhadani’s acceptance and his success in obtaining a comprehensive consensus.
    A quiet election session, but…
The session to elect the parliament speaker is expected to proceed relatively calmly and without public quarrels, but that does not mean things are going smoothly behind the scenes. The Iraqi political scene is complex and intertwined, and there are many conflicting interests and temporary alliances that may emerge during or after the session.
Constitutional and political vacuum: an ongoing crisis
It cannot be ignored that Iraq is suffering from a constitutional defect and a political vacuum resulting from deep differences between political blocs, especially Sunni blocs. With only a year and a half left in the current legislative session, the need to resolve the issue of the parliament’s presidency has become urgent.
Informed sources indicate that the issue of resolving the position of the Speaker of Parliament may be close to being resolved this week, with internal and external pressures mounting to reach a consensus. However, as is the case in Iraqi politics, nothing can be taken for granted until the last minute.
    Unprecedented consensus?
If reports of a Shiite-Kurdish-Sunni consensus on Mahmoud al-Mashhadani are true, this would be a precedent in Iraqi politics, as no speaker of parliament has ever achieved this kind of consensus. However, the question remains about the accuracy and validity of these announced and unannounced positions, especially in light of the unexpected movements and alliances in the political scene.
     Old memory and ongoing controversy
It is clear that the selection of Mashhadani does not enjoy much support in the Iraqi street, as tweets from Sunni sources on Twitter indicate that many see him as a reminder of an old phase in Iraqi political history, and prefer to give a chance to new faces and younger figures. These criticisms reflect a segment of society’s desire for change and renewal, rather than a return to the “old guard.”
Salem Al-Issawi: The main obstacle facing Al-Mashhadani?
Meanwhile, there are reports that the other Sunni candidate, Salem al-Issawi, is refusing to withdraw from the race despite the pressure and offers he has been subjected to.
If Al-Issawi continues with this position, Al-Mashhadani's chances of reaching the parliament presidency may become very slim, which opens the door to more negotiations and settlements at the last minute.
Based on the current situation, the electoral process for the Iraqi parliament speaker appears to be complex and challenging. While Mashhadani may be the closest to the position, his acceptance is cautious, and there are many factors that could influence the final outcome. The Iraqi street is still uncertain about this choice, and there is a possibility that the equation could change at any moment, making it difficult to predict what will happen in the coming days.
