Baghdad Council calls for increasing project allocations

Baghdad Provincial Council has called for an increase in its financial allocations within the current year’s budget, which it is currently preparing, to contribute to covering the number of huge projects assigned to it in the capital, considering what was allocated to it during the past year to be little.
The head of the Administrative Divisions Committee in the Council, Dr. Muhammad Amin Al-Shaalan, said in a statement to “Al-Sabah”: “Baghdad’s budget for last year, amounting to 400 billion dinars, is small, as most of it was directed to ongoing projects and no new strategic projects were included, especially since there are several faltering and extinct projects.”
He explained that the council is in the process of addressing all administrative departments to prepare a database of their needs in order to include them in next year’s budget, stressing that the local government of Baghdad will demand an increase in financial allocations since the population of Baghdad is between seven and eight million people, in addition to the fact that the random gatherings are around 700 thousand, and they constitute a great pressure on services, since their number is increasing in light of the lack of a trend to end their file.
He pointed out the need for strategic water projects in the peripheral areas and the treatment of important issues such as water. Therefore, the areas that need a large project are replaced by a complex with a capacity of 200 m3/hour, most of which have suffered from extinction.
In the same context, Al-Shaalan confirmed that there are areas such as Abu Ghraib district, 60 percent of whose problems were solved after the establishment of the Abu Ghraib Central Water Complex Project with a capacity of ten thousand m3/hour, considering the project strategic, as it will also serve the Karkh areas, pointing out at the same time the need for water projects in the districts of Al-Madain, Al-Taji and Al-Tarmia to solve the water problem and allocate effort in one place instead of several projects distributed in the villages and rural areas.
He also touched on the issue of the destruction of areas on the outskirts of Baghdad by the terrorist ISIS gangs, revealing that the fund for the restoration of affected areas included six governorates in addition to the outskirts of Baghdad, but they never benefited from it by establishing strategic projects because their targeting began late since 2021, in addition to the fact that the allocations allocated to these areas within the fund are only sufficient to build schools or small projects, meaning that they are not strategic and therefore do not rise to the level of need.
