    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Independent politician Aid Al-Hilali called on Saturday (September 21, 2024) for the Supreme Judicial Council to question the dismissed Parliament Speaker, Mohammed Al-Halbousi, about his great wealth at the expense of public money.
Al-Hilali told Baghdad Today, "Al-Halbousi still believes that he lives in the same glory and pride that he had before he was removed from the House of Representatives, and his recent statements indicate a state of confusion as he loses his political standing and electoral chances on a daily basis, and he wants to regain part of those chances through such statements that attack the government and attack other political parties."
He added, "There is an agreement between Halbousi and parties within the Coordination Framework to nominate a specific figure for the presidency of the House of Representatives in order to amend the elections law, with the aim of undermining the space and chances of the current Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, in the upcoming parliamentary elections."
He continued: "Al-Halbousi should not forget that he is wanted by the judiciary for committing the crime of forgery, and his talk about budgets and bridges is far from the truth, and everything that was spent was on state projects, and some companies are requesting large sums of money to implement some projects because they fear working inside Iraq due to the lack of a safe environment in the past, and the participation of those companies is a positive message to the world and to all investment companies that Iraq is stable in terms of security and that these companies can work in it safely."
Al-Hilali added, "The talk should be about building palaces, large investments, and exploiting political money, especially since this matter is very clear in Halbousi's election campaigns. We do not find any importance in the statements of Halbousi, who has become greatly enriched at the expense of public money. Halbousi should ask: Where did you get this money from? He should not ask the government about its spending of the money, which works 24 hours a day to complete important and strategic projects."
The independent politician concluded by saying, "The Iraqi judiciary is required to urgently question Halbousi about his great wealth, and he should not be left with a free hand as he is accused of the crime of forgery, and this matter is proven against him by a decision of the Federal Supreme Court, and for this reason he must be tried."
Yesterday, Friday, the head of the Progress Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, criticized the construction of bridges in the capital, Baghdad, indicating that their value is three times the budget of 15 governorates .
Al-Halbousi said in a televised interview that he "is one of those who object to the idea of the three-year budget for economic and operational reasons," noting that "the three-year budget restricted the legislative role of the House of Representatives ."
He added, "The value of the bridge projects currently implemented is three times the budget of 15 governorates."
In a move based on a “forgery” claim filed by a member of parliament, the Federal Supreme Court, the country’s highest judicial authority, decided on November 14, 2023, to terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.
