    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday (October 16, 2024), the Secretary of the Iraqi Communist Party, Raed Fahmi, commented on the situation in the region and its impact on Iraq, noting that an attack on Iraq is not unlikely.
Fahmi said in an interview with Baghdad Today that "the situation in the region carries the risk of expanding the scope of armed conflicts and war more than at any time in recent decades, and the brutal war waged by the Zionist Israeli entity persists in its aggression and crimes, violating all human values, norms and international covenants."
He added, "The entity is intoxicated by the criminal assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders it has achieved, and is strengthened by the unlimited support provided to it by the United States and some European countries, and the silence and complicity of some Arab countries."
He continued: "But despite the huge number of martyrs and victims and the destruction that befell the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, and the steadfast Gaza and the steadfast South Lebanon, Netanyahu and his fascist government did not achieve any of the declared goals of his military operations. The hostages were not recovered, nor were Hamas and Hezbollah eliminated, and it is not expected that the residents of the north of the Zionist entity will return to their areas soon, and the aggression failed to break the will of the resistance."
He pointed out that "this heroic steadfastness faces an unequal war that Netanyahu is trying to exploit to achieve goals that go beyond liquidating the Palestinian cause to bring about a strategic change in the balance of power throughout the region, in favor of the New Middle East project with full support from the United States and its allies."
He explained that "what is presented to the peoples of the region, including Iraq, is how to contribute to the failure of this project in its various dimensions. There is no doubt that the first and most urgent goal is to intensify efforts and use various means, political and diplomatic work, and the system of Iraq's political and economic relations to exert the greatest amount of pressure on the international level towards an immediate cessation of the war, on the one hand, and to provide multi-faceted support to the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples."
He explained that "in this context, the responsibility of making the decision of war and peace is raised, which the government has confirmed that the three presidencies alone have the constitutional right and legitimacy to make, and no other party has the right to assume it," stressing that "this is a constitutional principle and a main element of the main components of state sovereignty, which must be respected for the supreme interest of the nation in these extremely dangerous circumstances."
He pointed out that "confronting the challenges of the current situation is a national responsibility and dealing with it and the way to confront it should be based on national participation and through the state and its institutions," noting that "an attack on Iraq is not unlikely and therefore it is necessary to anticipate all possibilities and strengthen national unity and avoid any unilateral position from any party."
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed on Sunday (October 13, 2024) that we reject the exploitation of Iraqi airspace as part of the war zone.
Hussein said in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart in Baghdad, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the region and our countries are facing fateful challenges as the aggression against Gaza and Lebanon continues," stressing that "the Iraqi government warns against expanding the scope of the war in the region."
He added, "We reject the exploitation of Iraqi airspace as part of the war zone, and we affirm that the Iraqi government has no decision to go to war and that the decision is subject to the state with its three authorities."
Hussein added, "The outbreak of war in the region affects navigation and leads to the creation of an international energy crisis. The continuation of the war and its expansion towards Iran and the exploitation of Iraq as a corridor are unacceptable."
