British archaeologists return to Iraq for first time in more than 20 years

    By Khawla al-Ukaili

    Azzaman, April 9, 2013

    British
archaeologists are back to Iraq after more than two decades of absence
and have started digging at a Mesopotamian site close to the fabled city
of Ur, the British embassy in Baghdad said in a statement.

    The
statement said the team of six scientists is from the University of
Manchester. The team’s presence signals a return to normalcy
particularly in southern Iraq where Mesopotamia’s most outstanding
    relics and monuments are located.

    The statement said the team’s
travel to Iraq has been arranged by Professor Stuart Campbell from
Manchester University’s Department of Near Eastern Archaeology.

British scientists have a brilliant record in Mesopotamian excavations.

    The
British Museum had a permanent base in Iraq with scientists excavating,
studying and examining Mesopotamian riches and finds throughout the
year, before closing their office down following Iraq’s 1990 invasion of
    Kuwait.

British scientists have left indelible marks on Iraqi
archaeology as they have pioneered the discovery of magnificent and
priceless finds, thousands of clay tablets and scores of ancient sites.

British embassy’s statement said the site the new team has gone to is at least 4,000 years old.

    The
team is coordinating with young Iraqi scientists, particularly new
graduates of the country’s archaeology departments working currently at
    the Iraq Museum.

    Manchester University’s Department of Near
Eastern Archaeology is closely cooperating with the Iraq Museum and
counterparts at Iraqi universities as well as the Antiquities
    Department.

“The presence of the team is part of a project which
is the first step on the path of cooperation in the field of archaeology
between Iraqi universities and their British counterparts,” the
    statement reported Campbell as saying.

This sounds good as they must think it is getting safer to be there.

I hope they will return all of the artifacts they took out!
