Maple Leafs' Matthews, Bozak miss skate but will face Reimer, Panthers

TORONTO — Sunny Jim will try to place a dark cloud on his former team, which aims to stay bright at the Air Canada Centre on Thursday night.
After spending last month's visit as an observer on the Florida Panthers' bench as Roberto Luongo worked the crease in a 3-2 Toronto win, James Reimer will get his first start against the organization that drafted him in the fourth round a decade ago, leading to a six-year stay that earned the Manitoban praise for his upbeat professionalism, particularly through some tumultous seasons.
All the talk has centred around 'Reim Time' in the leadup to this game, but the smiling goaltender said he will approach his homecoming start the same way as any other.
"The thing is, it has to be just another game. It's it's not just another game then you're thinking too much about it," said Reimer, who was dealt by Toronto to San Jose last season and signed a long-term deal with Florida in the offseason. "Will there be parts of it that are different? Sure. But at the end of the day, you've just got to approach it like another game. You've got to focus on the puck. It doesn't matter who's shooting it."
Of course, the Leafs' top priority is not to ensure their old teammate feels the love upon his return. In this business where winning is what matters, Toronto, which enters the game tied with Florida and Detroit at 17 points - outside of a playoff position through 16 games - hopes to keep the offensive engine humming at home.
The Leafs are an impressive 6-2 at the ACC this season and are coming off a 6-2 drubbing of Nashville two nights ago on home ice, ignited by James van Riemsdyk's second career NHL hat trick, William Nylander's first goal in a dozen games and a four-assist night from Tyler Bozak, who leads the team with 14 points.
For reasons unknown to those outside the dressing room, Bozak and fellow centre Auston Matthews did not take part in the morning skate, but head coach Mike Babcock was quick to quiet any speculation, opening his morning news conference by saying both will be in the lineup against Florida.
"Good enough to eat, good enough to be in the morning meeting, can't be that bad," Babcock said when asked if either player was ill.
The Leafs roster will be relatively unchanged from Tuesday. The lone switch will see Connor Carrick slotting back on defence after being scratched for one game. Fellow defenceman Martin Marincin will take his place in the press box against the Panthers.
"I think Connor has been all right, to be honest with you," Babcock said. "He's an elite skater with a great read. So he's got to do more with his stick and cutting people off then he does in physical contact. And then just use his skill set. He's a real confident player."
The Leafs are among the league leaders in shots on goal. Getting pucks to the net will once again be the idea against old pal Reimer, who will go against Frederik Andersen at the other end.
"He had a lot of good games here and he did everything he could for this organization, so that's something we don't look past," Leafs forward Nazem Kadri said of his former teammate. "I'm sure he's going to be wanting to win just as bad as us.
"I've got a couple options," Kadri added when asked about his built-in advanced scouting on Reimer. "He's played with me for awhile, too, so he knows a few tricks up my sleeve. Obviously playing with him a little bit helps."
The Panthers are in the midst of a four-game road trip and are riding back-to-back victories, including an overtime win against the Canadiens, Montreal's first home loss this season.
The Floridians will try to make it three in a row with some help from an emotionally charged Reimer.
"Obviously the first time there's a lot of emotions, a lot of memories and whatnot," said the goalie, who had dinner for Leafs forward Peter Holland and Marlies forward and fellow Manitoban Bryron Froese on Monday night. "Even still, the last couple days, your'e still walking around the city and you obviously still remember a lot of the good times. But obviously this time in my life has come to an end and I'm starting a new one here."

Unsigned free agent Brandon Prust, who has been practising with the Leafs, and Holland, who is expected to be a healthy scratch, took Bozak's and Matthews' places during morning line rushes.
