Here’s how the Edmonton Oilers, last-minute losers, have let eight games slip away this year

The 2016-17 edition of the Edmonton Oilers is improved in many ways, but the team has now just dipped below real .500, losing to Philadelphia by blowing a two-goal lead late in the third.

This kind of dramatic defeat has been a habit for the Oilers this year, who have lost eight games in the late stages of the third period or overtime.
Here’s how each game slipped away:
Game 10, Leafs 3, Oilers, 2. Leafs centre Nazem Kadri grabbed Connor McDavid and worked his way around him for a clear break and the winning goal just 11 seconds into overtime.

Game 11, Rangers 5, Oilers, 3. With 1:21 left in a tie game, Matt Benning fumbled the puck in the corner, lost a battle and then Milan Lucic failed to take the New York attacker, and winning goal scorer, in the slot. New York next put in an empty-netter.
Game 14, Penguins 4, Oilers 3. With 1:42 left in a tie game, Oscar Klefbom lost a battle, Leon Draisaitl was out of position and Benoit Pouliot deflected the puck into his own net.

Game 22, Coyotes 3, Oilers 2. With 11:54 left in the game and the Oilers up by a goal, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lost a defensive zone faceoff and Adam Larsson failed to tie up his man in front on the deflection. The Oilers then lost in the shootout.
Game 23, Coyotes 2, Oilers 1. With 3:46 left in the third and the score tied, Darnell Nurse allowed a centering pass from the corner and Jordan Eberle failed to cover his man in the slot.
Game 27, Wild 2, Oilers 1. With 1:50 left in overtime, Kris Russell gave up too much gap, Mark Letestu lost his man on the switch and Mikko Koivu deked out a sprawling Jonas Gustavsson on the winning goal.
Game 28, Sabres 4, Oilers, 3. With 28 seconds left, Matt Hendricks was oh so slow moving to the Sabres shooter, who rang it off the post, then Russell lost a battle in the crease as Buffalo tied the score. Adam Larsson was next called on an iffy penalty and Buffalo won it on a power play slapper early in overtime.
Game 29, Flyers 6, Oilers, 5. Oilers blew a two goal lead in the third, with Philly scoring on a deflected-in power play goal with 13:29 on the clock and tying it up with 7:49 left, after Patrick Maroon and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins both failed to clear the puck out of the zone or take their men down low. With 1:29 left, the Flyers scored the winning goal after Klefbom was deked out on a rush down the wing.

Any silver linings here? Not really, though it’s worth noting that at least a wide variety of players have had on the goat horns after each of these losses, which has prevented the wrath of the fans from descending repeatedly on any one culprit. The last-minute losing has been a full team effort.

Er, maybe that’s not a silver lining after all.
