They had their chances. In fact it was a very good opportunity push a team that arrived in Winnipeg at 2:30am that morning after playing in Colorado. It wasn't to be and again, like previous games the Jets found another way to steal defeat from the jaws of victory.

Here's the problem that's on everyone's mind right now. It might be a different problem later but this is the hot topic no: defence system(s).

The Jets play an odd sort of man coverage and the belief, or reasoning from the outside view, is that they are trying to manage shots to certain locations/zones. That's what Gus Katseros said on 1290 this morning and he might be right.

What it does do leave for potential confusion in coverage and that's exactly what happened on San Jose's go ahead goal. With Enstrom out, it was the Stuart Trouba pairing again and when San Jose entered the Jets zone on Stu's side he froze. Trouba came over to play the man and Stu came in behind him but it was all too late. The pass came around from behind the net to a wide open Marleau who whipped it into the net before Pavelec even turned.

Laine was the other goat on that goal. He was on Marleau, rather supposed to be and didn't follow him. He owned up to his mistake after the game and took it like a pro, hopefully he learns from it.

The challenge here is that the Jets are finding new ways to screw up. They are not a good team between the pipes so they have to play to reduce those kinds of chances. Even more so in the third period when they have seen the goalie give up rebounds and poor positioning.

The man coverage they employ is simply not right for their current skill set as if you lose the man what happens? Go back the fourth goal if Trouba does not come over and Stuart loses his man, which he was in the process of doing, Trouba covers his side and likely defends the pass to Marleau, or makes it that much more difficult.

The Jets are like a minor hockey team where the desire to do things is so great it supersedes the adherence to system and direction. Now instead of one player causing a problem the situation is doubled because two are out of position creating a cascading effect.

Is the defence system a problem because of the coaching or is it because of the players? It might be both and that some players can execute it and other seemingly cannot or will not, for whatever reasons.

That's today's issue, or at least the hot issue. There are more, many more and the team needs to start addressing them, in fact it's long overdue.

There were some bright spots as Bryan Little continued to shine and Andrew Copp also had another excellent game as he moved up the lines. Patrick Laine in his return managed an assist although it was a rather dubious one but he too was solid and the team has missed his puck control skills. For such a large body he is deft at moving the puck in a small space and several times he helped keep a play alive because he could do so.

From an offensive stand point the Jets did everything they could to win this game, and perhaps over thought on occasion instead of doing. The chances were there though and that's what matters most. The problem is sometimes you have to be able to win with only scoring 3 goals and right now that's not a reality for the Jets.
