Game 52: Lightning Lose Third Consecutive Contest

The Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the Ottawa Senators Thursday night 5-2 for their third straight loss. Tampa is now one point ahead of the last-place Detroit Red Wings in the Eastern Conference.

Home-ice has always been where the Bolts play their best but they have now lost three in a row and five of their last six games at AMALIE Arena.

The first period provided very little action from either side as both teams entered the locker room after the first twenty minutes still tied at zero. Whenever a team is stuck in a game like this with the Senators, it can always be argued that the contest is going exactly Ottawa's way.

Ottawa is known for not scoring many goals but also preventing the opposition from lighting the lamp often. Tampa Bay appeared to have fallen into the systematic game plan of the Senators early and could not get much going. As the period went on, the Lightning began to pick up their intensity and produced some decent chances on offense.

Once again, the Bolts failed to enter the first intermission with a lead. Luckily, they were dealing with a tie instead of a deficit.

The Senators appeared to gain control in the beginning of the second period but the Lightning got ahead where it mattered. Tyler Johnson capitalized on Ottawa's poor play in their own zone scoring his 16th of the season, giving the Bolts a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, Tampa would give the momentum right back to Ottawa when Mark Stone tied the game up not even three minutes later with his 17th of the season. Of course, the Senators would then take the lead later in the period with a goal from Kyle Turris (18).

It was Deja vu for this Lightning team as they once again witnessed any sort of progress they made be squandered by the other team. Ottawa would not lose the lead after Turris's tally, receiving more scoring from Mike Hoffman (18), Stone (18), and Chris Kelly (4). Brayden Point (5) would make it interesting making it 3-2 with his second goal in his second game back but the Lighting could never get completely back into it.

As has been the problem all season long, Tampa Bay cannot put together a solid 60 minutes of hockey. In a time where every game is a must-win, the Bolts appear to have lost all sense of urgency as if they know this season is lost.

I have said it before and I will say it again, this team needs some sort of shakeup and Steve Yzerman needs to deliver one soon. The Lightning may not be playoff bound this season but they are better than what they have been showing recently.

The Bolts will look to end their current losing streak when the Anaheim Ducks come to town on Saturday night.
