Here are my Eastern Conference playoff predictions for the opening round:

    (1) Washington Capitals vs (WC2) Toronto Maple Leafs

    Prediction: Capitals in 6.

I'm really high on this Leafs team now and moving forward. I had them making the playoffs prior to the year and had they matched up with the Ottawa Senators in the opening round I would have picked the Leafs to beat them, make their way through the Atlantic bracket and reach the conference finals.

That's not the world we live in, though, and I don't see how the Leafs can get by the Caps. The Capitals have three lines that score consistently, four defensemen I'd be comfortable skating on the top pairing every night and one of the best goaltenders in the league. Toronto's kids are incredible and will find a way to make things interesting but I like Washington in this one.

    (1) Montreal Canadiens vs (WC1) New York Rangers

    Prediction: Canadiens in 7.

Montreal finished the year on a high note going 16-8-1 during their final 25 games and controlling 52.7% of the 5v5 shot attempts in that span, good for 4th in the NHL. Meanwhile, the Rangers limped to the finish winning 11 of their final 25 and ranking 22nd in possession during that span.

I think the Rangers' speed and scoring depth up front will cause the Canadiens some problems but the latter should be able to control the play at 5v5, and they have the league's best goaltender, so I'm going to go with them.

    (2) Pittsburgh Penguins vs (3) Columbus Blue Jackets

    Prediction: Penguins in 7.

I think this is going to be an incredible series and is probably my favorite matchup in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have great goaltending, play fast and possess a lot of scoring depth. Pittsburgh has more star power capable of taking over games, though, and I think that will shine through as the series progresses.

    (2) Ottawa Senators vs (3) Boston Bruins

    Prediction: Bruins in 6.

With several bodies returning to the lineup (Clarke MacArthur, Bobby Ryan, Marc Methot, etc.) and lesser players like Chris Kelly finally losing their spots I like the Sens now a lot more than I did a few weeks ago. Still, I'm going with the Bruins. I have concerns about the Sens' defense outside of Erik Karlsson and I think whichever big duo (Bergeron-Marchand or Krejci-Pastrnak) doesn't have to play Karlsson is going to eat the Sens alive.
