PHANTOMS ELIMINATED AFTER 3-2 LOSS TO HERSHEY

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms were eliminated from the Calder Cup playoffs on Sunday after suffering a 3-2 regulation loss to the Hershey Bears at the PPL Center. Home ice was no advantage in the best-of-five series. In a series that saw two games settled in overtime and four of five games decided by a single goal, the visiting team won every game. The series marked just the second time in Calder Cup playoff history that the home side lost every game.

The Phantoms cut 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to a single goal but never found an equalizer in Game 5.
Stanislav Galiev (third goal the series), Christian Thomas (1st) and Colby Williams (1st) scored for Hershey. Colin McDonald (power play, 2nd) and Taylor Leier (1st) scored in a losing cause for the Phantoms.

Martin Ouellette stopped 23 of 26 shots in a losing cause for the Phantoms. The Thomas goal was a deflection and the Williams tally was off a defensive breakdown that would have required a miraculous save with two Bears in front. Winning goalie Pheonix Copley turned back 28 of 30 shots, including a Danick Martel breakaway. The McDonald goal was scored off an end board carom of a Travis Sanheim point shot. The Leier goal was scored from the left hash marks with a burst of speed past the defense. Copley got a piece of the shot but not enough.

The Phantoms went 1-for-3 on the power play on Sunday (3-for-14 in the series) and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill (a perfect 13-for-13 in the series), including a 5-on-3 kill prior to the Williams goal that provided what proved to be a vital insurance goal.

With the Phantoms losing to Hershey and the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins losing in five games to the Providence Bruins, the two top teams during the AHL regular season are both out of the playoffs. The Bears and Bruins will face off in the second round.

    CARLSON HOCKEY GAME FINALE

The Carlson Hockey Games preparation tournament for the 2017 IIHF World Championships wrapped up on Sunday in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. In battles between arch-rival national teams, Finland defeated Sweden in regulation by a 3-2 count and Russia defeated the Czech Republic via shootout, 4-3.

Valtteri Filppula, who scored the lone goal in Finland's 1-0 win over Russia on Saturday, did not play in Sunday's game.

Ivan Provorov scored a goal for Russia midway through the third period of their game, forging a 2-2 tie at the time. Roman Lyubimov centered the third line for the Russian team. Jakub Voracek (four assists in an 8-4 win over Sweden on Wednesday) and Radko Gudas were both given the day off for the Czech side.
