This isn't too big of a deal, but at least it's something new!!

You can only relive the second round elimination so many times.......so it's nice to see the Capitals moving on and setting the table for next year.

With so many RFAs and the debate over whether to keep at it or revamp the roster massively, the Capitals summer promises to be - at worst - pretty interesting.

The Expansion Draft requires the Capitals to expose at least two forwards who played 40 games last year and have a contract for next season. So they have traded a fifth round pick to the Wild for Tyler Graovac. He isn't very good (39% CF, hardly scores) but he does meet the expansion exposure requirements, thus allowing the team to avoid having to expose Lars Eller.

Jay Beagle is one F who meets the requirements, and unless they wanted to expose Tom Wilson - they don't, although I wouldn't be against it, and would keep Connolly instead, but that's just me - then the Caps needed another player to expose.

They could just sign Connolly (Brett, for once I won't call him Tim) and then expose him, but why negotiate a contract on a player you might lose anyways? Connolly is a really effective player, who though he was scratched in the Playoffs in a terrible coaching decision, has really been good for the Capitals.

The seven forwards the Caps likely protect are Ovechkin, Backstrom, Johanson, Kuznetsov, Burakovsky, Eller, Wilson.

The trade allows Eller to be protected and now they can expose Graovac and Beagle, who meet requirements. I assume that Connolly will still be exposed even though he doesn't, as I am sure the NHL isn't going to allow such an obvious workaround. In the end, it probably doesn't matter because barring a trade with Vegas to avoid it, they are losing backup goalie Phillip Grubaur.

Anyways, not that exciting, but now you're informed.
