The Islander 16/17 report will wrap up in the days to come as we have reached our final four grades. Today we focus on rookie Josh Ho-Sang. Josh is the brilliant smart kid who may have slacked off or had senioritis but once finally given a chance, Ho-Sang took advantage of it and changed the Islanders for the better.

Ho-Sang proved that he is a dynamic, special player with game changing ability and skill. In twenty-one games with the Isles, Josh scored four times and added six assists. It was more than just points on the score sheet. Ho-Sang drew penalties and created chances on every single shift. He was consistently one of the best players on the ice when he was out for a shift.

Furthermore, outside of defenseman Nick Leddy, Ho-Sang was the only other Islander that could consistently skate and carry the puck out of his own end. In fact, when JHS grabbed the puck behind his goal, you could feel and energy in the building and he kept you on the edge of your seat.

As we look at his first twenty-one games as a pro, Ho-Sang was as good as advertised, perhaps even better. It wasn’t all perfect, yes he needs to get stronger. He was good in his own end, but he can be better. JHS can also cut down on his turnover a bit. Finally, he needs to shoot more. Ho-Sang’s vision is beyond elite and his hockey sense is off the charts. If teams have to respect his shot, then all of the passing lanes will open up even more and Ho-Sang will find the open man.

As we assign a grade for Ho-Sang, I have to give him a grade of A-. I know it is a small body of work but what his presence did in the lineup helped turned this team around and made him must watch whenever the team was playing. There is plenty to improve on but you have to be encouraged from what you saw from Josh Ho-Sang in 2016/2017.
