The saying “numbers do not always tell the story” applies to Johnny Boychuk’s 2016-17 season. The defenseman had a bounce-back season but it terms of numbers, Boychuk had three fewer goals (six) than the previous two seasons and one more assist (17) than the 2015-16 season.

However, it’s pretty safe to say that Boychuk was the most consistent Isles defenseman all season. He was among the leaders in most advanced stats and led in hits.

The way that Boychuk plays the game will cause him to miss quite a few games each season. He missed 16 games this season, 12 of which came when blocking a shot in Chicago back in March. When he is out of the lineup, the team has a losing record. He has missed 38 games since being traded to the Islanders back in October 2014.

The 33-year-old has five more years on his contract, which includes a $6 million cap hit and a no move clause. General manager Garth Snow did not ask Boychuk to waive the NMC and will have to be protected in the expansion draft. I do not criticize the contract back when it was signed and I’m not going to start. Expect Boychuk to continue missing games as each season goes on. However, you cannot ask him to play a different style as he would not be as effective.

    2016-17 final grade: B+
