Shafaq News / Iraqi Parliament Speaker, Osama al-Nujaifi announced on Wednesday, that he will submit a proposal to Prime Minister, Nuri al- Maliki and Vice President, Khodair al- Khozai on drafting the Law on Kirkuk province elections.
“The local elections in Kirkuk province is an important issue, stressing that it have been delayed a lot,” Nujaifi said during a press conference held today in the parliament, attended by “Shafaq News”.
Nujaifi noted that the delay in drafting the law on Kirkuk elections is due to the Turkmen objection on it, explaining that two paragraphs have been repealed from the Electoral Act 2008
.
Nujaifi pointed out that it is time to submit the proposal and read it, adding that he would personally submit a proposal to the Prime Minister and Vice President of the Republic for the formulation of the proposed law to prepare the provinceelections.
Kirkuk (250 km north east of Baghdad) is one of the disputed areas between Erbil and Baghdad, as the permanent Iraqi constitution has solved this problem in Article 140 through a mechanism that included the normalization of the situation , conduct census and finally a population referendum to join Kurdistan region or stay within the federal government
.
However, the application of this article sparked sustainable conflicts among the political blocs and the representatives of the Kurdish components; Arabs and Turkmen that caused delaying it.
