The United States will accept a maximum of 45,000 refugees during the fiscal year 2018, US President Donald Trump said Saturday.
The administration proposed this limit in a congressional report on Wednesday. This is the minimum since at least 1980.
In its report to Congress, the administration confirmed that it may assess refugees based on "the likelihood of their integration and contribution to the United States".
The reduction of the ceiling is a disregard for the escalating humanitarian crises around the world that are pushing people to flee their country in greater numbers and a departure from the global leadership role of the United States, refugee advocates say.
Trump said the reduction was necessary to allow US officials to cope with the growing number of asylum seekers in the United States and to better examine refugees.
"The main concern is that this assessment is not done on a case-by-case basis but may be biased against certain religions or nationalities," said a member of the Wilson Center and former State Department official Joseph Cassidy.
The US Supreme Court allowed President Trump, two weeks ago, to implement a broad ban that prevents refugees from all over the world from entering the United States.
