The US-led international coalition to fight a militant organization said on Thursday that more than 400 US Marines and artillery personnel would leave the city of Raqqa after helping to wrest control of the city from militant organization.
Last month, US-backed armed factions announced victory in Raqqa, the former bastion of Daish in Syria, after months of fighting with the help of the Washington-led coalition.
"With the liberation of the city and the escape of an oppressive organization, the unit was ordered to return home, which was replaced by an alternative unit.
"We are reducing the size of our combat forces when it makes sense, but we are continuing our efforts to help Syrian and Iraqi partners maintain security," Brigadier General Jonathan Braga, the coalition's operations director, said in the statement.
"Our remaining forces will continue to work alongside and through the partners' forces to defeat the remnants of the Islamic state, prevent their re-emergence, and create conditions for governments and non-governmental organizations to help local citizens recover from the horrors of the Islamic state's short-lived rule," Braga said.
According to the Pentagon, there are 503 US soldiers officially in Syria, but US officials have said until last week that there are nearly 2,000 troops in Syria, and the latest announcement will reduce this figure.
With the crackdown on Daqash, it is not yet clear how many US troops will remain in Syria, if they are to remain, mostly from the Special Operations Forces, to train and mentor the forces of local partners, including the provision of artillery support against militant militants.
Separately, Russian news agencies reported that Russia had announced it was already preparing to withdraw its military strength from Syria. Finished
