A US soldier who fled to North Korea for more than half a century and was finally allowed to leave the isolated country to Japan died at the age of 77.
Reuters quoted an official in the Japanese town of Sadu as confirming the death of Charles Robert Jenkins, who was filmed as an evil American spy in a propaganda film.
One of the strangest stories of the Cold War began in 1965 when Jenkins, then a 24-year-old US Army sergeant, disappeared on a January night when he was on patrol in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.
Jenkins, from the small town of Rich Square in North Carolina who never received any high education, said in a sensational martial trial in Japan in 2004 that he had fled to avoid a dangerous mission in South Korea and to escape fighting in Vietnam.
While in North Korea, where he taught English to soldiers, Jenkins met with Hitomi Suga and married her.
And a 20-year-old Japanese saga hijacked by North Korea to help train spies.
Suga was allowed to return to Japan in 2002, followed by Jenkins and his two North Korean daughters in 2004.
He moved late in 2004 to live with his family in his hometown of Sadu after spending 30 days in jail.
