WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan was sharply attacked after quoting a female employee at a school whose salary was raised by $ 50 a week due to tax cuts.

Ryan deleted a tweet on Twitter from a high school secretary, whom the House speaker described as "happy to surprise" her salary increase.

Many social networking users ridiculed Ryan's comment, saying $ 0.50 was not a big increase at all.

Republicans say tax reforms will help companies and individuals, and will help boost economic growth.

But Democrats, who oppose the amendments, say the tax cuts will benefit rich people in the first place.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Ryan had deleted his "embarrassing joke" because it was "a stark acknowledgment" of the unfairness of tax law amendments.
