Washington Post: Premium phone chip trading is gaining popularity in Iraq

     Translation: Hamid Ahmed

In Iraq, the "premium" mobile phone market has prices comparable to those on the Gold and Diamond Exchange. Acquiring this distinctive thing will make it easier for you to succeed in your work or make the Iraqi politician stand up to himself.
This key that opens a lot of those doors is just a SIM card mobile phone SIM card.
But not any sim card card. But it should be "distinctive" because it is associated with a distinctive phone number that reflects the owner's position and prestige because it contains serial and beautiful numbers. For example, this number is a sequence of numbers, zeros, or a repetitive pattern of numbers.
The trade of these simple plastic chips, placed inside a mobile phone to link gold and gems markets, competes in a trade whose prices reach tens of thousands of dollars.
This trade emerged a decade ago, and developed on the basis of new optimism about the future of Iraq after the recent victory over the organization of a preacher.
The increased demand for premium SIM cards has helped aspiring entrepreneurs, young politicians and young people looking to attract women.
This trade has become so popular that major mobile phone companies in Iraq have begun to attract and promote advertising by offering SIM cards ranging from "Silver" to "Diamond Plus".
The standard SIM card is sold for $ 3, while the cost of a silver SIM card carries a combined number of serial binaries such as 4455 up to $ 30.
The price of the Diamond Plus Diamond, which represents a figure in which the last five digits are the same, will cost between $ 1300 and $ 1,500.
The shouts of this trade were first born in the street and in the crooks of the Internet conversation, where there were large-scale Sim Card cards dubbed "Presidential Numbers".

Haidar Mohammed, 45, who owns a mobile phone shop in Baghdad and specializes in selling distinctive numbers, told the Washington Post: "These numbers are a language, usually a man makes calculations to make him successful in his life or work. Which he cares about is what he can suggest and reflect on his phone number. "What did he tell a phone number that contained a combination of zeros or consecutive numbers from his owner?" Mohammed said, laughing, "reflects that the owner has a taste, gives him optimism, or gives him prestige and prestige. "He said.
Mohammed said he once gave a handsome phone number to a businessman in exchange for a $ 600,000 Lexus, a claim confirmed by a top rival in the premium trade.
Iraqis are now fond of anything from car brands to clothes. Luxury luxury stuff that once was within reach of the narrow ruling class, now filled the market.
If you have money, you can express your personality through what you wear and what you drive and what you carry with your hands as well. Therefore, those who have an ambition to strive for success and excellence, especially between the business class and politics, winning a distinctive phone number has become a must.
While there are phone numbers in several parts of the Middle East, they are not as high as the number market in Iraq.
Prices in other parts of the world rarely reach $ 100. In Iraq, it means something more than ostentation and vanity. Eisa Sultan, a 47-year-old construction contractor, says he bought a six-digit phone number in seven consecutive years for $ 1,200, indicating that he later offered $ 10,000 to him. But refused to sell it.
"If you call them from a normal number, they will not answer my call, but when they see that number, they can not ignore it, because they know that someone from VIP Contact them ".
"I always have the latest iPhone and the latest Land Cruiser," he says. "The phone number complements this prestige."
In a country like Iraq, where corruption is rampant in the public sector and the state, the award of SIM cards with special numbers to politicians is common and an illegitimate way to win the favor. Cards help whiten bribes, because they can be sold for cash.
Card dealers say many of their clients are aides to Iraqi politicians and military officers who come to sell valuable cards to their bosses.
Hossam al-Zaidi, 29, says he is looking for a girl to be authenticated, pointing out that one of his friends has a special number that helped him authenticate many girls.
"I decided to try, but I was shocked by the prices, so some numbers are more expensive than the prices of cars," Zaidi said.
Safa Mohsen, a 44-year-old mobile phone owner, describes himself as the owner of the distinctive numbers and owns nearly 2000 SIM cards with the most expensive numbers, the most expensive of which is $ 3,000. He says he can value and price the numbers and deal with them.
The Washington Post says her reporter asked him to value the phone numbers of some politicians and officials he had contacted from the paper's Baghdad office.
When he showed him the phone number of former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, Muhsin said he was estimated at more than $ 10,000, while the price of the phone number of Maj. Gen. Fadhil Berwari is at least $ 38,000.
Mohsen says the most expensive price for a phone number with seven zeros is a $ 120,000 offer back to a Kirkuk police officer he bought in 2007 for only $ 125. It is like wine as the age of its age increases its price.
