Amnesty International has strongly criticized the Iraqi government's policy towards demonstrators demanding their rights and blocking Internet services.

The organization said in a report on the protests in Iraq, that deliberately blocking the Internet violates the right of people to freedom of expression, and strongly points out that "the authorities have something to hide."

Amnesty International called on the Iraqi authorities to: "Immediately end torture and other ill-treatment, including beatings, harassment and intimidation of peaceful protesters by security forces, and prompt, independent and impartial investigations to bring all officials to justice."

"It is the duty of the authorities to ensure that everyone in the country exercises their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful protest without interference," the report said.

The Iraqi authorities have greatly weakened Internet access and have also blocked social networking sites since demonstrations broke out in protest against the chronic lack of services.
