(Reuters) - Heavy mines, sleeper cells and tunnels dug by a pro-Syrian organization in eastern Syria are blocking the completion of Syria's democratic forces to the last spot under the control of extremists, a news agency reported.

About a week after they were launched, the organization's fighters are encircled by an area of one square kilometer, including part of the town of Al-Bagouz in the far east of Deir al-Zour with a camp south of the town.

Field commanders in the Syrian Democratic Forces reported that "the remainder of the organization's fighters in the defense" were being consulted about the last spot under their control, with the Kravre fighting continuing between the two sides.

"We do not know what the objective of this resistance is," said Adnan Afrin, a spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces campaign in Deir al-Zour.

In the past two days, according to Afrin, the organization used "the cells it planted behind it, as well as the motorcycles." This prompted Syria's democratic forces to comb the areas it controlled as the organization tried "to put pressure on our forces by moving cells in liberated areas" .

"We are forced to take our caution. This is a very delicate stage, because it represents the end of the organization, and the presence of civilians who are at home," Afrin said.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, these forces, composed of Kurdish and Arab factions backed by Washington, are engaged in the dismantling of heavy mines laid by the organization, and the search for hidden elements and tunnels in which they are holed up and from which they carry out suicide attacks against Syria's democratic forces.

"The presence of mines and tunnels is hampering the progress of Syria's democratic forces to complete its full control of the region," said Rami Abdul Rahman, director of the observatory.

The organization often relies on suicidal and bomb attacks to impede the progress of its adversaries and inflict the greatest number of casualties each time it is trapped inside its strongholds.
