Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday denied signing any 25-year strategic agreement with China, rejecting reports that Iran had granted special rights to the East Asian country under the deal.
"Comprehensive agreement with China has remained at the level of the proposal and no agreement has been signed to this effect," Zarif was quoted as saying by state media.
Referring to allegations of granting special rights to China under the demanded deal, Zarif added, "This is a fundamental mistake."
The British-based Petroleum Economist magazine has raised such speculation, saying Iran and China updated a 25-year deal signed in 2016 that predicted $ 400 billion in Chinese investment in the resource-rich Middle East.
The update, which was denied during Zarif's visit at the end of August, to Beijing, where his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, Chinese State Councilor, described the two countries as "comprehensive strategic partners."
