Baghdad - Mawazine News
The Iraqi Authority for the Control of Radioactive Sources announced, today, Thursday, understandings with three countries to accelerate the construction of Iraqi nuclear reactors.
The head of the authority, Kamal Hussein Latif, said, "The governmental committee for the construction of nuclear reactors for research purposes held several initial meetings to study the stage data and the principles adopted for the construction of the reactors in accordance with the guidelines of the International Energy Agency." Ross Atom. "
He added that "it was agreed to write a memorandum of understanding that included many items that will contribute to expediting the construction of the reactors," noting that "there is another meeting with officials in the French embassy to talk about Iraq's need and need for electron-nuclear reactors."
He stressed that "Iraq is also looking forward to joint cooperation with France and the European Union in general to enhance Iraq's nuclear capabilities in the field of peaceful applications," pointing out that "the French side is eager to work with Iraq in the field of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and we are waiting for it to obtain full approvals so that I can know the details of cooperation." "It will be in accordance with the terms of a memorandum of understanding also that includes support and assistance to Iraq in the field of medical use as well as for energy production."
He continued: "We also requested a meeting with the competent officials on the American side, as this is being carried out by an authorized and high-level delegation from the committee and other government agencies."
Regarding the cadres capable of working, Latif assured that "in every nuclear program work is carried out simultaneously with the construction of the reactor, preparing the cadres that must work on the same design in the country of origin," noting that "this is what is in place in all countries of the world and we will bring young graduates recently." When signing contracts for the project for training and completing their graduate studies to coincide with the opening and operating period.
Regarding the reasons for not activating the Atomic Energy Authority Law No. 24 of 2016, Latif said, “I don’t know the reason that prevents the government from activating the law of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission,” expecting that “the reason is that the authority is still linked to the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the ministry’s status is now unclear.” .
Latif stated that "I believe that the decision taken during the government of former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi regarding merging the Ministry of Science and Technology with the Ministry of Higher Education, was not a correct and ill-considered decision, as the two institutions differ in terms of work and there is no reason for this merger, and it will not reduce the expenses as it was believed." On the contrary, the state will bear additional sums due to university allocations, which are estimated at about 36 billion Iraqi dinars when it was calculated, "considering that" the merger led to the demolition of an edifice of important scientific human cadres, and they became unemployed five years ago. "
Regarding nuclear reactors, Latif said, "The stage we are in is a stage of understandings and finding common ground with partners, and it precedes the bidding stage." ".
The Iraqi Commission for the Control of Radioactive Sources confirmed on November 3, 2020, that five countries are candidates for the construction of a new reactor in Iraq, namely the United States of America, Russia, Argentina, South Korea and France, while noting that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazimi during his European tour discussed the issue of building a nuclear reactor With France, as the representative of the French embassy said, this issue has become a matter of great concern to the French government.
