, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Martin Huth, confirmed, on Wednesday, the support of the Iraqi government in holding the upcoming elections on schedule, revealing preparations to send a European mission to monitor them and ensure their integrity, while providing technical assistance to the Independent High Electoral Commission in the amount of 5.5 million euros.
In an interview with the official newspaper, Haut said, "The Iraqi people demanded early elections, and the government and parliament are committed to holding them on the 10th of next October, and we see that all concerned foreign countries support the electoral process, and the Independent High Electoral Commission is working hard to finish the technical preparations, which are I am confident that everything will be ready for the elections to take place on schedule."
He added, "Therefore, we see no reason to postpone the elections further, and of course we in the European Union expect and demand that these elections be characterized by integrity, credibility and complete transparency, and that they be held in an environment appropriate to achieve these goals."
Haute pointed out that "actual electoral fraud and attempted fraud must be reduced, whether at the technical or coercive levels, to the lowest possible level, and what raises concern is the security and human rights environment in which the elections will take place, in the event that protesters, activists and journalists continue to be threatened, targeted or assassinated." This will seriously damage the reputation and integrity of the elections, so it is essential that candidates feel safe enough to run, and that voters feel secure so that they can participate and vote in large numbers.
