Saif Abdullah
The Ministry of Agriculture revealed the reasons for the delay in implementing the Green Belt project for Baghdad, while experts ruled out the possibility of implementing the project around the capital, for several reasons, the most prominent of which is the place designated for its implementation.
The ministry's spokesman, Hamid Al-Nayef, told Al-Mada that "the Green Belt project is not a new one, but rather a long time ago," adding, "There was delay in this project because it was affiliated with several parties."
Al-Nayef added, "The authorities responsible for the green belt project are the Baghdad Municipality and the municipalities' directorates," noting that "the Ministry of Agriculture is not concerned with these green belts." Administrative matters are the responsibility of the relevant authorities.
He pointed out that "the ministry has more than once addressed the relevant authorities to submit their requests to convert barren lands into green spaces, in order to provide them with perennial and fruitful trees and others."
This is a promise by experts in the field of water, the Baghdad Green Belt, that it is not built on correct foundations or a clear plan, as (Al Mada) contacted many researchers and experts in the field of water, who confirmed that “the Baghdad Green Belt project should be fully planned and not randomly.”
Meanwhile, agricultural advisor Adel Al-Mukhtar said, "The recent climate conference in Glasgow stressed the need to surround cities with green space to maintain a balance in nature."
Al-Mukhtar added, in a statement to (Al-Mada), that "the green belt is not applicable around Baghdad, for several reasons, the most prominent of which is the place designated for the implementation of the project, which needs constant attention to plants," noting that "this project needs a long-term plan for the province." At the same time, he called on the concerned authorities to “pay attention to agriculture around the governorates, because the climate in Iraq requires a significant increase in oxygen generation.”
It is noteworthy that the Baghdad Municipality revealed, earlier, the details of the Green Belt project around the capital, while indicating that it will contribute to reducing temperatures and reducing dust storms, as the Mayor of Baghdad Alaa Maan indicated that 10-15 billion dinars were allocated to establish the Baghdad Green Belt project, being One of the important projects, and it is being studied at the present time.
