Intensive calls for comprehensive reform at Baghdad International Airport amid deteriorating services and infrastructure!

Iraqi circles are witnessing intensive calls to review the status of Baghdad International Airport, in light of the increasing complaints about the deterioration of service conditions in various aspects. These demands come against the backdrop of repeated reports addressing the decline in the level of services provided to travelers, whether in terms of cleanliness, logistical efficiency, or dealing with the increasing number of travelers.
There are also issues related to the airport’s infrastructure, such as maintenance of facilities and delayed development, which has caused inconvenience to a large number of users, including international and local travelers. Some parties have criticized the lack of continuous development at the airport compared to other regional and international airports, as travelers suffer from poor services such as flight delays, lack of adequate facilities, and weak electronic service technology.
Calls have been growing for fundamental changes, including upgrading facilities and improving services, as well as appointing new management capable of dealing with the challenges facing the airport.
Member of the Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee, Zuhair Al-Fatlawi, described the meals prepared on board Iraqi Airways flights as one of the corruption files that “destroyed” the company, calling on the Prime Minister to intervene in this file.
Al-Fatlawi said, “There is a deterioration in the conditions of Baghdad International Airport, which was built in the sixties of the last century, and the same is true for the green bird (Iraqi Airways), which used to reach most of the world’s airports, including Heathrow Airport in London, but the lack of professional management to run the airport caused many problems.”
He added, "The Baghdad Gate Company, which is responsible for the airline's catering contract, ended in January 2024. This company does not have a headquarters or office in Baghdad or anywhere else, but rather uses the halls and kitchen of Baghdad Airport to prepare meals."
He stressed that “the company provides two cold meals per flight at a price of seven dollars, and another hot meal at a price of 12 dollars,” explaining that “the two meals are below the required standard, and the Prime Minister must intervene and open the food file, which is important and one of the corruption files that destroyed the most dangerous bird.”
Baghdad International Airport suffers from several problems in various fields, which prompted Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to assign Minister of Construction and Housing, Benkin Rikani, to manage the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority.
