Minister of Electricity Adel Karim made new promises to increase operating hours next summer, revealing that there are solutions to address the fuel crisis through a series of contracts to invest associated gas, and he talked about a program with international companies to develop the work of the number of stations and raise their production capacity.
Karim said, in a television interview followed by (Al-Mada), that "the electricity file in Iraq is technical and economic par excellence, despite that, politics has a role in it from far or near."
He added, "Overcoming the problem of electricity depends on the existence of a professional programme. It is not possible that a country like Iraq suffers from the same crisis and is repeated, especially with the high temperature in the summer."
Karim believes that "the electricity crisis is solvable, and we presented a plan to the Council of Ministers, and it is expected that the file will improve next summer by adding about 7,000 megawatts, and this will positively affect the operating hours."
He stressed, "Our success in implementing this plan depends on providing support, especially at the financial level, as this year was a year of financial drought for us."
Karim stated, "Iraq will reach the stage of parity within two and a half or three years, and this, of course, also depends on support," noting that "fuel will be available through a number of new contracts, including those related to the exploitation of associated gas."
He explained that proceeding with the plan set by the ministry as required, means that Iraq will have a reserve of electricity of about 4 thousand megawatts by 2025.
Karim spoke about “a number of stations that are ready or almost ready to operate, but technical, economic and contractual problems, auditing bodies or investigative committees have delayed their operation.”
He continues, "One of the stations in Kirkuk, with a capacity of 380 megawatts, was dependent on a financial sum of three billion dinars, and other stations can provide us with more production, but the lack of fuel in time led to the loss of quantities of energy, as happened in Amara when we lost 450 megawatts last summer.”
Karim added, "Next summer, Iraq needs 35,000 megawatts, and our efforts can reach 25,000 megawatts."
Karim added, "All gas stations in Iraq will be subject to a work program in order to increase their production rates by signing contracts with international companies, in order to face the summer season, which witnesses a decrease in the efficiency of production units."
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Electricity had revealed yesterday the development of a plan in three phases, short, medium and long term, ending after five years, aiming to reach the production of 54,000 megawatts.
